We attended the Tinicum Polo Match and Car Show held on Saturday June 16th. It was a great event. The polo field is located just off River Road in Tinicum Park. Just look for the Polo Match sign. The Tinicum Polo website has a diagram of the field and viewing areas. If you want to tailgate, you take the first left on entering the park. If you go straight you will see the northern end of the Polo Field. Their website asks that you wait until the horses are down at the other end before proceeding. Parking is available and there is a general seating tent near the announcer’s stand. If you want to photograph the match, this side of the field is probably better due to the sun being behind you.

In addition to the match, there was an antique and classic car show. The winner was the beautiful turquiose 1929 Packard Super 8 shown here.

In addition there were 20 or more other vehicles ranging from a Model T Ford through a mid 70’s Camaro. There is usually something going on each week in addition to the matches.

The match itself is exhilarating to watch. the game is divided into 6 “chukkers’ . The field is the rough equivalent of about 9 football fields in size. The athletic ability of the players is astounding. They stand in the sturups galloping from one end of the field to another. There is contact between the horses. While doing all this, they are trying to hit and control a tiny white ball with a mallet. The players come from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey and sometimes even further. The folks we spoke with all told of the addiction to the game. The horsemanship is remarkable. The horses are being hit by other horses, balls and mallets. The game requires constant turning and flat out running. The teams are comprised of 4 players each and there are usually two referees on horseback.

Tips

  • Bring along some food and beverages along with plenty of sunscreen.
  • Field glasses or binoculars are a real help when the action is at the far end of the field.
  • Be sure to check the tips at Tinicumpolo.org.
  • Be sure that any children don’t get near the field or into the safety zone on the sidelines. The balls move fast and the horses are a half ton each.
  • If you have kids, take them to “Charlie Chukker” at halftime. They can sit on an aluminum pony and try their luck at hitting a polo ball.
  • The matches can be cancelled for weather or field conditions. Call the Tinicum Polo Club’s information number (found on their website) for up to the minute information.

This is a great way to spend the day with the family. For more information, please visit the Tinicum Polo Club’s website at www.tinicumpolo.org

Keep a good map of Bucks County handy when you are out sightseeing (or a decent GPS) and plan ahead . You will probably have a few detours to deal with. Eight Bucks Bridges are closed for repairs. If you know of any free and paid wifi spots in Bucks County, please leave us a note in the comments or use our feedback form at

http://www.bucksviews.com/feedback.htm

Don’t be shy if you are a business owner who has a wifi site. We’d like to build as complete of a list as possible.I had to kill some time the other night near Newtown PA. My earthlink aircard isn’t working right now. I headed over to the Zebra Striped Whale in the center of Newtown and got a scoop of low fat chocolate yogurt, a cup of coffee and free wireless. The place can get pretty busy during the summer. There is a counter in the front of the place and a nice cozy room in the rear with a few tables.Anyway, we’d appreciate your sending us the locations of local free wifi. We can get a pretty good handle on the paid wifi such as the UPS stores and the T-mobile at Starbucks. It’s the free wifi in restaurants and other locations that we need some help with.

thanks

An article in Phillyburbs was talking about traffic problems on side streets near Second Street Pike and Street Road in Upper Southampton. During any part of the rush hour, Second Street Pike is at a virtual crawl.A developer wants to take 3.5 acres of commercial/business property next to Premier Bank and rezone it to residential. Their plan is to put 57 condo units there. Question – If we already have traffic problems does it make any sense to rezone commercial/business property into residential? The developer is asking for a half dozen or so variances in order to build there.Part of the development plan, as I understand it, is to route the traffic from these condos onto both Street Road and by the old train station onto Second Street Pike. So, we already have a traffic problem and now we are going to add a couple of hundred cars entering and exiting 2nd Street Pike and Street Road..

Calming
measures sought for traffic (phillyBurbs.com) Intelligencer:

“Residents of Hampton and Summit avenues are fed up with drivers usingtheir close-knit neighborhood as a cut-through from Street Road to Second StreetPike. They’re asking the Upper Southampton supervisors to look intotraffic-calming measures for what residents describe is a neighborhood filledwith children.”

Some good news here. Doylestown Hospital is expanding it’s maternity ward. Frankford Hospital in Northeast Philly has recently closed it’s maternity center.. Having a baby.. Better hold it in till you get to a hospital that has a maternity staff.

While maternity wards across Southeastern Pennsylvania have closed indroves, two local hospitals are upgrading and expanding their services for

expectant moms.

Warminster Hospital closed its obstetrical unit in 2000, and Jeanes Hospital,in Northeast Philadelphia, last week became the 14th unit to close in

Southeastern Pennsylvania in the past decade

Anyone want to guess why the obstretrical units are closing???

Malpractice insurance is expensive

Yep, those lawyers have to earn enough for the country club, the house in aspen, the mercedes, the mistress…. there are other factors including the payments by Medicare and the insurance companies which often don’t cover the cost of services.

So, if you are a young couple planning to have children, take a look at the local hospitals when you are looking for your new suburban home. Where is the nearest hospital with a maternity ward??

I’m not sure what the most recent trends are, but the real estate prices have really skyrocketed. When we bought in Bucks County in 1997, we looked at a LOT of homes. It was a real sellers market then. If you found a home you liked, you had to put the bid in before you walked out the door. There would often be bidding wars that evening.

If you look at a consumer price calculator to factor in inflation, say http://www.minneapolisfed.org/research/data/us/calc/ it appears that the value of our home has risen at a greater rate than inflation.

Bucks County has a lot to offer. Some of the advantages for Bucks County compared to our old neighborhood in Northeast Philly were- Easier parking in Bucks- Cooler temperatures overall – we are surrounded by trees now, not asphalt, buildings and cement.- We like the Bucks Politics a whole lot better than philly and their constantly indicted politicos with strange stuff on their blackberries- Better schools- A more favorable environment for small business owners.- Lower car insurance- Generally safer neighborhoods

Bucks County real estate transactions Inquirer 06/03/2007:

“Upper Southampton Twp 1702 Hawkins Dr Evgueni and Irina Bobkov to Marina Gutman, $283,000.

1340 Jeanette Way Alan S and Ronda Lang to Michael D and Debra M Marano, $410,000.1062 Rozel Ave James H and Heidi D Marquisette to Thomas Joseph and Joanne S Reilly, $310,000.

811 Willow St Edward S Walthery Jr to Ryan J Murray, $205,000.”

It’s a little late to be posting this but, if you are looking for something to do today, check out the Bucks County Covered Bridges Festival. The Link to the Inky story below will provide the details. Head out early before tropical rain storm Bob or Barry or Barty or whatever it’s name is soaks the area.

Best Find: Bucks County Covered Bridges Festival Inquirer 06/03/2007: “What it is: A weekend-long celebration of Bucks County’s historic covered bridges Saturday and next Sunday at Tinicum Park in Erwinna.
The festival will feature Cabin Run, Covered Bridge Road, Plumstead Township; Erwinna, Geigel Hill Road, Tinicum Township; Frankenfield, Hollow Horn and Cafferty Roads, Tinicum Township; Loux, Wismer Road, Plumstead Township; South Perkasie in Lenape Park, Walnut Street, Perkasie; and Uhlerstown, Uhlerstown Road, Tinicum Township.”

The Blue Sage contines to offer consistently excellent service and food. We stopped in for lunch on Thursday. We had a bit of a wait since the place was completely full. We shared the Blue Corn Asparagus Tacos which are made with Grilled asparagus, tomato-almond pesto with jack cheese in a griddled blue corn tortilla. For desert I had a chocolate panini. This is 2 slices of toasted walnut bread with melted chocoloate and a scoop of , I believe, cinnamon Hazelut Gelato. If you think like a kid, you are actually eating a chocolate sandwich.!!. Life doesn’t get a whole lot better than that. They are now offering cold soups for takeout. The place is almost always packed. It makes for a little bit of a noisy environment but that is more than offset by great service and food.

Blue Sage Vegetarian Grille

We stopped in for Lunch at the Yardley Inn today (Saturday). It was 3:30 and the parking lot was packed. Evidentally, they were having a couple of graduation parties. Luckily, we had reservations for 2 at a window seat. The seating was a little tight, but then again, I’m not exactly petite. The service was excellent. We both had the crab cakes. $17 for one crab cake with mashed potatoes and squash. It might sound pricey, but the cake was mostly crab with very little filler, not a bread cake that you get at some other places. For desert I tried the Lava Cake. Picture a rich chocolate cake with melted marshmallow and chocolate..The ambiance is that of a 1700’s Inn with a location on facing the Delaware river. River Road runs right by the windows, so you get a little bit of traffic. The trim is black and the walls are painted a dark colonial tan. The entire restaurant is non smoking except for the outdoor patio are.Lunch for 2 with deserts and no drinks came out to just under $60. ( and was well worth it)

The Yardley Inn, located in historic Bucks County, features a classic country Inn atmosphere with a spectacular River View.

It’s always good to see my Alma Mater showing up in a positive way in the news. HGP was a great place to go to school. It’ s locate in Cornwells Heights on Route 13. If you are travelling down 95, you can get a pretty good view of the school.I’ve heard it said that “A gentleman does not need to know Latin, but he should have at least forgotten it”. When I attended HGP in the 70’s Latin was mandatory (and yes, I have forgotten a great deal of it). The Newtown Friends School also teaches Latin to their 6th Graders..The other thing about HGP is that I Always think of it when I see Harry Potter or The Name of the Rose. It’s built somewhat like a gothic castle. It is, of course, much smaller than anything in Harry Potter. The Chapel is truly beautiful with pews that face the center. I rememer always trying to get the pews furthest from the aisle because they had armrests.

Holy Ghost forensics team places in top 5 at national event (phillyBurbs.com) Courier Times: “The Holy Ghost Preparatory School’s forensics team recently placed in the top five of a national competition in Houston, Texas, that featured more than 500 schools and more than 2,000 competitors.”

This isn’t to be confused with the dingbat who recently stole an ambulance. The article details the fact that a lot of the ambulance squads in Bucks County have financial problems.I’m not thoroughly re-assured that “the next closest ambulance will be dispached”. For things like a heart attack or major trauma, seconds count. With hospitals closing, the logistics of getting those needing emergency care to the proper treatment facility just gets more complicated.

KYW Newsradio 1060 Philadelphia – Ambulance Squads in Bucks County Say They Are Being Pinched Financially: “Two ambulance companies in Bucks have already closed down, unable to make a go of it because of financial problems. Leaders at surviving squads say that should serve as a warning that something needs to happen soon”

New Hope passes a smoking ban.Well, this will change the bar scene if it is enforced. (there are follow up stories about the borough possibly not enforcing the ban). All of the restaurants we frequent are either already non smoking or have real non smoking sections, not a ‘non smoking section’ adjacent to a smoky bar.I have some mixed feelings on this. We simply vote with our cash and avoid restaurants that are not completely smoke free in the dining area. I’m not a big fan of government dicating to businesses how they should operate. On the other hand, the quote by the police officer merits consideration. People have to visit these establishments in the course of their work.

delawareonline ¦ The News Journal, Wilmington, Del. ¦ New Hope, Pa., passes smoking ban: “Effective in 30 days, the ordinance also bans smoking within 20 feet of the entrance to a bar or restaurant and in any borough-owned facility, with exceptions for sidewalk cafes, outdoor service areas and private clubs”

This is really sad.. The bridges are a beautiful part of our rural landscape. Why anyone would want to commit this type of barbarism is unfathomable. There are technologies to fireproof the bridges. Hopefully Penndot or a private corporation will provide funding to do so. In the meantime, it’s nice to know that those responsible for the Knecht’s bridge fire got jail time and hefty fines. Kudos to the prosecutors…

Arsonists once again strike at a Bucks covered bridge : The Morning Call Online: “COVERED BRIDGE was damaged when someone tried to burn it down by setting hay bales on fire.”

The Bristol Riverside Theater is a beautiful theater right on the riverfront in historic Bristol, Pa.If you are looking for something to do, check out their offerings. I’ll have to check into it a little more closely though.. I’m not sure my brain could handle listening to music from Bread.

Bristol Riverside Theatre mixes it up with schedule (phillyBurbs.com) Other Entertainment: “The Bristol Riverside Theatre takes a summer break from its mainstage offerings in favor of pop music of the 1960s and ’70s, jazz, magic and shows for children.”
